VOW is one of the non-governmental organizations (NGO) cited by UNESCO's standing committee in the working group report entitled "The Contribution of Women to the Culture of Peace". An accredited NGO to the United Nations, affiliated to the Department of Public Information (DPI) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), VOW was the Canadian lead group for peace at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. Members have been active in follow-up activities, including writing the chapter, "Women and Peace" in Take Action for Equality, Development and Peace.

Join VOW for the UN 54th Session of the CSW 1-12 March, 2010

 

Every year, we attend the annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at UN headquarters in New York. The dates for this are 1-12 March 2010. This is a special year as it marks the 15th anniversary of the Fourth World Conferce of Women. The Commission will devote some of its work to reviewing progress on the commitments made in 1995 to the world's women as contained in the Beijing Plarform for Action, and more which followed.

Space may be limited. Priority will be given to VOW members. Cost is $50.00 which can be applied to an annual VOW membership of $35.00. Participants must be self-funded but, in return, are given the opportunity to learn about the history and function on this Commission and the very important role of NGOs in helping to shape its outcomes on behalf of the world's women. Typically, VOW organizes special group briefings with members of the UN Secretariat and the Canadian Mission to the United Nations. 
 

 

VOWs are invited to register early for the NGO Forum 2010 Feb, 27, 28 which immediately preceeeds the Commission on the Status of Women, which will also undertake a 15-yr. review & appraisal of the Beijing Platform for Action. In recognition of the anniversary, the NGO Cttee on thr Status of Women, NY is organizing an NGO Global Women's Forum to consider implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action ( BPFA.)  The forum will include 2 full conference days beginning with an opening ceremony, & continuing with plenary sessions, panel discussions, and workshops.  You may download the preliminary program. The NGO CSW/NY's Annual Consultation Day in preparation for the CSW 54 will be part of the Forum.
